21,000 employees and growing
LBSP was founded in 1984 and is located in the municipalities of Leiden and Oegstgeest with a surface of 110 ha (272 acres). The park is very close to the historic city centre of Leiden and the central station. The LBSP is easy to reach from nearby cities like Amsterdam, The Hague, Delft and Rotterdam, as well as Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. At the moment the park comprises 195 organisations of which 10 are education institutes, 11 research institutes,152 businesses (including multinationals as Galapagos, Johnson & Johnson, Apotex, Avery Dennison Corporation, Pharming Group, Eurofins, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Bristol Myers). There are also 22 healthcare and other organisations.Leiden University Medical Centre
The largest organisation is the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) with 7,000 employees. The LUMC is a key driver since the start and is also one of the main landowners. Other landowners are the Municipalities, The University of Leiden and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson). The park is governed by the LBSP Foundation and regulates the branching of the area and the focus on life science and health. The success of LBSP can be ascribed to its continuous focus on life science and health since the start in 1984. This was not always the logical choice during the different economic and real estate cycles. The result today is that LBSP is one of the leading life science and healthcare parks in Europe. The park has become a vibrant urban area with a varied array of education, research, business, public functions (such as two museums) and urban living. The park has still room for expansion (up to some 330,000 sq m / 3,550,800 sq ft) for life sciences and health-related business activities, offices and domestic housing. The main goal is to become a green innovation district with good connectivity.Currently there are 13 real estate and infrastructure projects in progress and four projects in planning with ground leases (50 year) averaging €400 (£331) per sqm for production and laboratories and nearly €500 (£413) per sq m for offices.Projects in progress
