In earlier editions we profiled Barcelona and Madrid, two life science powerhouses. We now return to Spain to focus on the Basque Country (Euskadi in the Basque language), an autonomous region in northern Spain. This dynamic bioregion has undergone a remarkable transformation from its traditional heavy manufacturing and steel industry base to become an innovation leader. With a population of 2.2 million and a highly skilled workforce, the Basque Country is increasingly central to Spain's life sciences story.
