The federal state of Hesse in the heart of Germany covers an area of approximately 21,000 square kilometers (8,109 square miles) and has a population of slightly more than six million. Its capital city is Wiesbaden, but its most significant city by far is Frankfurt or Frankfurt am Main to use the city’s full name.

The Main River is the longest tributary of the Rhine, and the entire Rhine-Main region has the highest industrial density in Germany after the Ruhr area. The chemical and pharmaceutical industries (represented by the Industrial Park Höchst, Merck KGaA, Heraeus, SGL Carbon, Evonik, and others) play a key role. The Rhine-Main region is also a hub for the IT and telecommunications sectors.
